NORTH SHORE MODERN
Regional Award Winner KDC 2013-14
Besides being beautiful and functional, this modern on Chicago’s North Shore showcases Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove appliances to the most dramatic effect, rather than tucking them away behind cabinetry.
The kitchen is centrally located within the home’s open floor plan, so designer Peter Theodore sought to make it a seductive centerpiece for family activities and entertaining. He set a host of gleaming stainless steel appliances – including the showstopping PRO 48 refrigerator– into the customized dark walnut walls. The wall that contains the 27” wine storage unit and microwave is uniquely designed, with recessed cabinets concealed within panels, offering the maximum storage the family needs but maintaining the clean, modern aesthetic that makes the kitchen a visual treat from any vantage point. The family entertains frequently, sometimes with dozens of guests, so Theodore created multiple cooking zones, placing the appliances so the cook can work while interacting with family and friends. Double ovens, a standard microwave and a 48” gas rangetop built into the long sleek kitchen island are easily accessible, and the perfect suite for large gatherings. A waterfall table allows informal dining or homework sessions. And when the party moves outside, they can be served with a complete outdoor kitchen anchored by a Wolf 42” outdoor grill.
Furniture quality wood, luxury appliances and simple, elegant lines all come together to create a fully workable space that satisfies the needs of the most demanding cooks and lovers of fine design. The marriage between the cabinetry and appliances is
seamless and stunning. According to Peter, even the family’s Double Yellow-Headed Amazon parrot (a family pet for fourteen years) loves the finished space. Polly want a new kitchen?
